VOLCANO SANTIAGUITO SUCHITEPEQUEZ GUATEMALA

Located in the department of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, Santiaguito Volcano is part of the Los Cuchumatanes mountain range and is one of the most active volcanoes in Latin America. With an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters above sea level, the volcano has been in constant activity since its formation in 1922.

Its name comes from the nearby town of Santa María Volcán, and its formation is due to the explosion of the Santa María Volcano which caused the creation of the new volcanic cone. Santiaguito consists of several lava domes that have experienced violent collapses and eruptions over the years, generating pyroclastic flows, lahars, and debris avalanches.

The eruptions of the Santiaguito Volcano are usually dangerous due to its proximity to nearby towns, which has led to the evacuation of communities on several occasions. Despite this, the volcano is one of the most visited destinations by tourists and scientists due to its unique activity and impressive landscape.

Currently, the Santiaguito Volcano continues its activity, constantly emitting fumaroles and occasionally releasing ash and incandescent material. The monitoring carried out by the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala makes it possible to be alert to any change in its activity and guarantee the safety of nearby populations.
